How To Pair Bluetooth Keyboard And Mouse With Amazon Fire TV / Stick

How To Pair Bluetooth Keyboard And Mouse With Fire TV / StickThis article will show you how to pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with an Amazon Fire TV or Stick.  Why would we want to do this?  Because the Amazon Fire TV App store doesn’t contain all of the Android Applications that we would like to install onto the system.  Many of those applications aren’t optimized for a remote control so it is necessary to use a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse with the Fire TV / Stick in these scenarios.

Unlike Android TV Boxes, the Fire TV / Stick does not contain the Google Play Store so we must sideload the applications that aren’t available for us by default.  Many of those will require a keyboard or mouse.

There are dozens of Android applications available today that provide high quality HD streaming of movies, tv shows, live sports, you name it.  These are the applications that many Fire TV / Stick owners are dreaming to install but first, we must connect a Bluetooth keyboard and/or mouse.

Below are the instructions that will take you through the necessary steps on how to pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with an Amazon Fire TV / Stick.  This process is simple and will open doors to endless opportunities for your streaming device.

In this example, I will be using a Fire TV Stick and the Rii i8+ BT Mini Wireless Bluetooth Backlight Touchpad Keyboard with Mouse.  The Rii i8+ is my favorite Bluetooth wireless keyboard/mouse combo and it works great with the Fire TV/Stick and Kodi.

Steps To Pair A Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse With A Fire TV/Stick

I recommend that you watch the video below for detailed steps.  You will also find a written summary below the video.

Important:  Your Fire TV must have software/firmware version 51.1.5.0 or greater for it to connect to Bluetooth devices other than game controllers.  You can check your Fire TV software version by going into Settings / System / About / and hover over “Fire TV Stick” and it will indicate the software version.

  1.  Go into Settings tab on you Fire TV or Stick and click “Controllers and Bluetooth Devices
  2. Click “Other Bluetooth Devices” and then click “Add Bluetooth Devices”
  3. Place your keyboard or mouse in pairing mode by pushing the button that activates this function.
  4. The Amazon Fire TV Bluetooth tool will scan for Bluetooth devices and connect your Keyboard or mouse once it is detected.
  5. Test that your buttons work on your Keyboard or mouse.
  6. Start using Android applications such as Google Chrome Browser with your Bluetooth keyboard or mouse.

I strongly recommend that you use the Rii i8+ BT Mini Wireless Bluetooth Backlight Touchpad Keyboard with Mouse as this is the best Bluetooth keyboard mouse combo that I have found for the Fire TV or Fire TV Stick.

Please use the comment section below and share which Android applications that you use on a regular basis that requires a keyboard and/or mouse.

Can you control an HDTV ( not smart) volume with the rii8+?

My fireTV locates this keyboard as a device and the screen says “pairing the device” after I select it but after a minute a message on screen says “pairing not successful try again” I have placed the keyboard next to the fireTV, Bluetooth light is blinking on keyboard, select the device again and still not pairing, just the unsuccessful message. Reset my fireTV and tried again same thing. Any ideas why it cannot seem to pair?

Hello, make sure that you shut off all other Bluetooth devices within your home. Also, restart your Fire TV before trying again.

      • Just Me August 21, 2017 at 1:54 pm - Reply

I tried that too and I also tried using the USB adapter that came with the keyboard and that isn’t working either so I might have a dud. The backlight doesn’t turn on for the keyboard either so perhaps it’s defective. Bummer I waited so long to set it up because it’s now past the Amazon return policy period.

Sounds like you have a bad keyboard.

Thanks Troy, I called Amazon and they are allowing me to exchange it.

I found my problem. Even though my key board looks exactly like yours, it is not bluetooth.

I have the exact keyboard that Troy is using. But, when I get to the part where he says push the pairing button on the keyboard, I don’t see what button he pushes and I just can’t find the right button. Also, since I am using the Firestick, there is no place to plug in the little USB thing that picks up the keyboard like there is on a android tv box that has built in usb connections. The only other way I see to use the keyboard wirelessly is by using a bunch of usb connections that require a OTG cable that nobody sells. I could use some help.

I just took a “closer” look of the keyboard courtesy of Amazon and my guess is that you’d use the top key of the right side of the board next to the mouse-pad touch screen. This is the one with the Bluetooth icon. I don’t have this board but by process of elimination and logic, this would have to be the button. Good luck. I came here to find out about whether the boards worked in Kodi as well. Troypoint is great. Question answered.

Hi Enjoy your tips I currently own the air mouse that you recommended. It had been working great. All of a sudden it stopped working. It still shows that it is Bluetooth connected but nothing is working. Did I touch something on remote to freeze it?

Probably a software compatibility update issue.

Does anyone know a key combo to get the Rii to activate the Fire’s options menu on apps or while streaming? That’s the only function I’m missing.

      ^^^^THIS please

    • Jim Casy September 18, 2017 at 11:53 am - Reply

While streaming i figured out to just use the track pad to go to the bottom of the screen like a mouse.
Still haven’t found an equivalent “options” button…

Use your Android or iOS device as a remote using the Amazon Fire remote app, from their respective, app stores. Works just like the original, including voice, but the added benefit of your phone’s keyboard. It syncs over WiFi so your fire has to be connected to WiFi already to work.

I got a new Rii and tried to hook it up to my fire tv. Nothing happens, no pair. I tried plugging the USB transmitter into a computer and it pairs right up. Any ideas?

    • Wes French March 25, 2017 at 1:48 pm - Reply

Nvm, figured it out. If your Rii doesn’t have the Bluetooth symbol key near the top right of the touch pad, then the USB dangle must be used. On the latest version of fire tv, go to settings, device, developer options, make sure USB debugging is off. This will allow the USB port to be active on the fire tv.

I tried to connect my Microsoft arc touch mouse to my 2nd generation firestick but it wont show up. Is there a reason why it isn’t working?

  14. Troy March 17, 2017 at 8:37 am - Reply

Yes, you can order new remote off of Amazon and when you pair, just hold down on your home button for 10 seconds and keep doing that until it pairs with your device. Make sure that other Amazon Fire TV/Sticks are turned off within your home when doing this so it only pairs to the one that you want.

Which Fire TV the 1st generation or the 2nd generation does the Rii i8+ BT Mini Wireless Bluetooth Backlight Touchpad Keyboard with Mouse for PC/Mac/Android, Black (RTi8BT-5) work on?

    Hi,

I see the keyboard has a Vol + and – key on it. I have the Amazon Fire TV Gen 2 box with current software (Not rooted). The AFTV Box is feeding the audio and video signals to my LG 65″ 4K TV via the HDMI Cable. The TV decodes the audio signal and allows me to take the digital audio output signal from the TV via a Fiber Optic cable and feed it directly to my Yamaha Surrsound Sound Receiver for full 5.1 surround sound.

In short, does the Vol + and – Keys on the keyboard allow you to control the volume via the AFTV Gen 2 box when watching movies from Amazon Prime, or Kodi local or remote video content?

Where does the USB dongle for the keypad connect to the fire stick tv?
Amazon says there is a port on the back of the fire stick?

    • Willie Stylez April 9, 2017 at 4:52 pm - Reply

Only the Fire T.V. has the USB, for the stick, for the Rii with Bluetooth.

I have two of these remotes. The one with firetv works great, wakes up and reconnects. The second one with firestick does not wake up (the firetv) and reconnect, I have to re-pair the keyboard every-time we want to use it. When the keyboard disconnects the problem starts all over again. HELP!

Top right button between the mouse pad and the arrows.

Amazon Fire Box is capable of the 2.4 GHZ version of the keyboard. Still recommend the bluetooth version? If so why?

  24. Mike Sanders September 7, 2016 at 12:26 am - Reply

Just so you know I tried the Rii keyboard and paired just fine. The Xfinity TV Go app I downloaded work fine with the keyboard but when I try to use the app without the keyboard the firestick remote doesn’t work very well. I tried many phone apps for the mouse and they didn’t work either. Unless you plan on using the Rii 100% of the time I would forget live and on demand just stick with HBO Go , Showtime Anytime and Starz and connect with your provider account.
