Nuvio Launches Supporter Membership with Exclusive Perks

Nuvio has officially launched a new “Supporter” program that lets users financially contribute to the popular media app while receiving a few exclusive perks in return.

Those who have been following Nuvio may notice that this sounds similar to the Stremio Supporters program that launched earlier this year.

However, there are some important differences between the two that we will explain below.

Nuvio Supporter is completely optional, and the developers have emphasized that the application’s core functionality will remain free.

The new program arrives after Nuvio developers recently detailed some of the financial challenges associated with maintaining the service.

Why Did Nuvio Launch a Supporter Program?

Nuvio has historically relied on donations to pay for servers, infrastructure, and a small portion of its development costs. Unfortunately, accepting these donations has apparently been more difficult than expected.

In a recent announcement on Reddit, the Nuvio team explained that it has gone through approximately four different payment providers.

According to the developers, providers have either rejected Nuvio because they don’t support donations or initially accepted payments before eventually suspending the account and holding the funds.

This prompted the team to ask the Nuvio community what they would like to receive for financially supporting the project.

Suggestions included profile badges, exclusive themes, additional customization options, feature voting, and more. A few days later, Nuvio Supporter was officially launched.

What is Nuvio Supporter?

Nuvio Supporter is an optional membership designed to help fund Nuvio’s continued operation and development.

The current Supporter perks include:

One thing we appreciate is that Nuvio is not taking existing features and suddenly requiring users to pay for them.

The developers made this very clear when initially discussing the idea in a Reddit forum:

“Nuvio will always remain free, and we are not going to take existing features and put them behind a paywall.”

They reiterated this when announcing Nuvio Supporter, noting that the program is completely optional and that no existing functionality has been moved behind a paywall.

In other words, those who don’t want to become a Supporter should be able to continue using Nuvio just as they did before.

At launch, Nuvio is encouraging users to use Patreon when possible.

There are different levels of support available, with the standard Supporter option at approximately $1.50/month and Supporter Plus at $3/month.

Where Do Supporter Features Work?

At launch, not every version of Nuvio supports the new perks. According to the development team, Supporter features currently work with NuvioTV and mobile.

The Google Play version is expected to receive an update that adds these capabilities as well.

The developers also say the feature-voting system is coming which will  give Supporters some input into which new features the Nuvio team prioritizes

Those who donate will also be placed into “The Wall” which is a thank-you to members supporting the project.

Nuvio Supporter vs. Stremio Supporters

Anyone familiar with Stremio Supporters will immediately notice some similarities.

Stremio launched its own Supporters program in June 2026 as an optional way for users to financially support continued development.

Both programs allow the core applications to remain free while providing benefits to those willing to contribute financially. However, there is a fairly significant difference in what users receive.

Stremio Supporters provides access to several experimental features, including:

• Multiple user profiles
• Skip Intro/Outro
• Download Manager
• Stream filtering
• Catalog organization
• Enhanced Cinemeta options
• Improved subtitle controls
• Appearance customization

Stremio currently charges $39.99/year for its annual Supporters membership, with monthly and lifetime options also available.

Nuvio appears to be taking a more conservative approach.

Rather than placing major application functionality into its Supporter tier, Nuvio is primarily offering cosmetic and community-oriented benefits such as themes, avatars, backgrounds, badges, and feature voting.

When Nuvio first asked its community for ideas, the developers specifically stated that they wanted to provide something supporters would value “without making the normal experience worse or locking any existing functionality behind payment.”

This is an important distinction and should help ease concerns from users who simply want to continue using the free application.

Nuvio Backend is Now Open Source

Alongside the funding announcement, Nuvio also revealed another major change that may be of interest to advanced users.

The Nuvio backend is now open source and available for self-hosting.

This allows users to host their Nuvio account, library, and synchronized data on their own infrastructure instead of relying on Nuvio’s servers.

The developers say this is intended for personal self-hosting and warn against using random public backend servers operated by third parties that Nuvio cannot verify or support.

This is particularly noteworthy considering the introduction of the Supporter program, as Nuvio is simultaneously giving advanced users more control over their data and infrastructure.

Final Thoughts

We have seen numerous changes within the streaming community throughout 2026, and the introduction of Nuvio Supporter is another noteworthy development.

Running servers and continually developing an application with a growing user base isn’t free, so it isn’t surprising to see Nuvio searching for a more sustainable source of funding.

Instead of removing existing features from free users, the Supporter program primarily adds cosmetic perks and other extras for those who want to help fund the project.

At its current price, it is also substantially cheaper than Stremio Supporters.

Of course, Nuvio Supporter is brand new and its features, pricing, and benefits could change as the program evolves.
