How to Add Music to iTunes Library – 3 Methods Explained

Add Music To iTunes Library

There are multiple ways to add music to iTunes Library. This is something that people may not know. Below are three different methods that you can choose from.

Purchase Music from the iTunes Store

Purchase Music from iTunes StoreThe simplest way to add music to your library is to purchase the music directly from iTunes. This can also be the most expensive way depending on how many songs you purchase each month. But some people enjoy owning their own music so this is one of the available options.

iOS:

  1. Open the iTunes Store app.
  2. Browse through the music in the Music tab, or tap on the Search tab and look for specific music you would like to purchase.
  3. Tap on the price of the song/album you are going to purchase and put your finger on the Touch/Face ID sensor or type in your Apple ID password to authorize the purchase.
  4. The items you purchased will now be in your iTunes Library.

Mac/PC:

  1. Open the iTunes app.
  2. Click on the Store tab at the top-middle of the window.
  3. Browse through the music or use the Search bar to look for specific music.
  4. Click on the music you would like to purchase and click Buy. Authorize the payment with your Apple ID password or Touch ID.
  5. The items you purchased will now be in your iTunes Library.

Once you purchase music through iTunes, that music will be available on all of your iCloud devices, such as iPads, iPhones, iPod Touches, and computers.

Subscribe to Apple Music

Subscribe to Apple MusicApple also provides a music service similar to Spotify Premium or Google Play Music where you can listen to any song in their library for $9.99 per month, standard price. This is probably the best option on this list because you can listen to any song out of the 45 million that they have, whenever and wherever you want. Apple Music also gives the option of downloading music for offline listening as long as you are still paying for a subscription. Here are the steps you need to sign up and start listening and downloading music.

iOS:

  1. Join Apple Music. Here are the methods you can use to do this:
    • Method 1: Open the Settings app and tap on Music. Tap on Join Apple Music. It will then bring you to the Music app where you can tap Choose Your Plan. There will be three pricing options you can choose from. Tap on the plan that is appropriate for you, then authorize the payment with your Touch/Face ID or Apple ID password. This will start your monthly subscription to Apple Music.
    • Method 2: Instead of going through the Settings app, open the Music app and tap the For You tab at the bottom of the screen. This will bring you to a screen where you can tap Choose Your Plan and complete the rest of the steps from above.
    • Method 3: Use the web browser on your device such as Safari to go to Apple.com. On the main page in the top left corner, there will be two horizontal lines you can tap to open a drop-down menu. From this drop-down menu tap on Music, which will bring you to an informational page about Apple Music. To sign up, tap on the free trial button. This will bring you to the Music app where you can tap the Choose Your Plan button and complete the steps from above.
  1. After you sign up for a subscription, you will have access to every song in the Apple Music library. The entire Apple Music library will not be downloaded to your device because that would take a ridiculous amount of storage, but you will be able to stream them over WiFi or cellular data. You will now also have access to Apple Music from all of your other iCloud devices, such as iPads, iPhones, iPod Touches, and computers.
  2. Now you can add music to your iTunes Library from Apple Music by tapping the plus icon next to the songs, albums, or playlists you would like to add. This will not download the song to your device unless you tap Download Automatically the first time you add a song to your library. This will cause the rest of the music you add to your library to download automatically until you turn off this setting.
  3. If you did not turn on the Download Automatically setting from the beginning and you would like to download music to your device, simply go to the song, album, or playlist you would like to download and tap the cloud icon.
  4. You will now be able to listen to this music offline on this device.
