A well-known domain registrar “Njalla” has been forced to shut down some popular streaming sites in the past week due to legal pressures.
Njalla is a “privacy-aware” domain service company that was actually created by the founder of Pirate Bay – Peter Sunde.
Over the past weeks, many domains of popular streaming sites that were registered by Njalla are now unavailable.
Some of the notable domains that have been shut down include the following:
In fact, it’s reported that legal pressures were actually coming from copyright holders in Iceland, and that’s what prompted Njalla to take action and shut down these domains.
If Njalla failed to comply, Iceland’s registry would then be able to suspend the domain company’s “NIC handle,” which means several other domains would be shut down in the process.
According to TorrentFreak, a spokesperson from Njalla commented on the situation:
“The company’s hand was forced, and it saw no other option than to take the domains ‘offline’. If Njalla had decided to ignore the request, all other .is domains under their control would have been at risk, which includes the domains of many other customers.”
All in all, it appears the end game with these legal pressures from copyright holders is to discover the true identities of those who are operating pirate websites, and pursuing domain registrars like Njalla is a step in that direction.

Although this is a victory for copyright holders, it only seems logical that this “cat and mouse” game of shutting down streaming sites will never end.
Will Users of Njalla Operated Domains Be Contacted?
It’s uncertain what’s truly happening behind the scenes with these takedowns of 1337x.is, flixtor.is, stream2watch.is, and other pirate domains.
We’ve seen website operators in the past hand over user data, streaming history, and identifying IP addresses. They’re also known to sell this sought-after information to other third parties.
It’s extremely important to only stream content not protected by copyright and protect yourself with IPVanish VPN.
These website operators & app developers can do anything they want to with your streaming history and identifying IP Address.
A VPN masks your IP Address and encrypts your connection to the Internet which makes you anonymous.
If you’re using IPVanish on any Internet-connected device, your data is protected because nothing ties back to your identifying IP Address.
Also, your Internet service provider can’t see what you’re accessing online since your connection is encrypted.
See our VPN on Firestick/Android guide for more information.
Overall, it will be interesting to see what happens with these pirate domains and the website operators in the future, but in the meantime, it appears these Njalla operated domains won’t be coming back.
