Nexbox A95X Review

Nexbox A95XThe Nexbox A95X was the best tv box seller on Amazon in July, 2016 and after reviewing this awesome piece of hardware, I know why.  When unboxing this unit, the first thing that blew me away was its tiny size.  You can hold the Nexbox A95X in the palm of your hand and the box only measures 93mm wide and height is only 11mm.

Another pleasant surprise within the package is a different looking remote that sports buttons that will make the Kodi experience much more enjoyable such as an actual Kodi button, volume control, context button, number pad, web launcher, power button, and more.  You will also find some handy keys that will take you directly to Kodi or to a live tv cloud interface.

You can order the Nexbox A95X with different specs.   There are three different configurations which you can choose from when ordering this from Amazon.  The one that I am reviewing is the model that comes with  2GB RAM and 16GB ROM which helps with buffering and quick performance.  You can order this from Amazon and see the different specs available by clicking this link – Nexbox A95X

Upon powering on the system, I was expecting to see the typical generic launcher that it seems all of these Android boxes come loaded with.  But not with the Nexbox A95X!  This comes with a beautiful customized launcher with a nice current weather condition widget toward the top of the screen.

The first application that I opened was of course Kodi.  Nexbox includes a nice build integrated with Kodi that seems to have all of the most popular plugins which is great for those who don’t know much about Kodi.  I could literally give this box to my dad who knows nothing about Kodi, show him a few things and he would be set.  Most of the Android boxes come with some sort of build but never include all of the best Kodi addons.  I really like this nice updated touch.

I exited Kodi to the launcher and clicked the “Kodi Center”icon.  This is a special section with the Nexbox A95X that provides the opportunity to install the most popular Kodi Addons with the click of a button.  Within Kodi Center, you will find addon categories for Live, Sport, Movie, Cartoon, Others, Music, Fixkodi, Backup, CheckVersion, and Feedback.  In browsing through the various categories, it is nice to see that the most popular Kodi Addons are available.  You can think of this area as a “Kodi App Store” for addons…this is very cool.

The Nexbox A95X also comes with Android 6.0.1 as its operating system which I haven’t seen on any other Android TV Box that I have reviewed yet.  The others all come with Android 5 or lower.

The Nexbox A95X is a great Android TV Box for those new to this hobby since it doesn’t require a lot of setup.  Most Android TV Boxes require getting things updated, installing addons, etc. but this one literally works out of the box.

Nexbox A95X Review – What I Like & What I Don’t Like

Things I like about the Nexbox A95X Android TV Box

  • Powerful Android TV Box with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage
  • Nice looking launcher that can be customized and very easy to use
  • Kodi build that comes with the Nexbox A95X includes all of the most recent popular addons and is easy to navigate
  • Kodi Center is a nice feature that allows you to install all of the most popular Kodi Addons with the click of a button, this is like a Kodi App Store
  • Capable of playing 4K videos without any problems
  • I like the remote that comes with this device as it includes handy buttons for Kodi such as volume and context button – also includes a one-key button for Kodi and one-key button for live cloud TV
  • Works excellent with Rii I8 Mini 2.4Ghz Wireless Touchpad Keyboard With Mouse
  • Different variations of unit available with different specs and price is great

What I don’t like about the Nexbox A95X Anroid TV Box

  • Include a Bluetooth remote but that would also increase the price
  • Include some remote friendly apps for the popular services that we don’t always use in Kodi such as YouTube, Hulu, etc.  Most Android boxes don’t have this

Would I use the Nexbox A95X Android TV Box As A Primary Streaming Device Within My Home?

Out of all of the Android Boxes that I have reviewed to date, the Nexbox A95X is my favorite for the many reasons that you see listed above.  Its sleek and small design are very attractive and it is hard to believe such a small box packs such a big punch.  This will be my default Android Box until a better alternative comes that provides remote friendly applications besides Kodi.

If I were going to start selling an Android TV Box on Ebay or Craigslist, the Nexbox A95X would be the one due to its simple setup process.

I can’t see the mouse cursor. It’s very hard to navigate with the remote so I plugged a wireless mouse in but can’t see the arrow/cursor. Trying to update to Kodi 17.4 but getting very frustrated. Any help?

at the beginning of the review, you mention “a nice current weather condition widget”, but that never appears anywhere in the video.

while praising the remote, you fail to mention that it lacks even the basic stop/play and FF/REW buttons that so many ill-conceived remotes overlook these days.

I have a Ott TV Box A95X with a Rockchip 3229 processor. It is not listed in the twrp devices so any advice on rooting it and cloning one box to many others? I can’t seem to get ADB to work either, the USB connect to my computer is not recognized on either side.

Troy, I bought the nexbox a95x with 2gb & 16gb and the Rii8 mini bluetooth keyboard on the recommendations from your site and cannot get the keyboard to work at all. It hooks up via bluetooth and says it is there but doesn’t work at all. Also the nexbox comes up, and I have uninstalled the kodi(tvmc) app and reinstalled kodi 17.1 and that went good. However when trying to install anything else it just doesn’t happen. Any hints on the keyboard installation or the nexbox workings? Both may be sent back pretty quick since I can’t seem to get them to work worth a crap. I have 2 firesticks and they work fine but haven’t tried the keyboard with them yet. Guess that’ll be next! Thanks

I’ve had my A95X a couple of months now and think it superb. I have Kodi, SPMC, Mobdro, BBC iPlayer and SwiftStreams satisfying all my tv requirements. It’s the only device that I’ve managed to get the amazing Kodi music addon MP3Streams work on. I also have a Rii keyboard and a large usb hard drive connected. It’s plugged into my Yamaha receiver feeding on to a Panasonic Plasma tv, hifi speakers and subwoofer. The icing on the cake is the excellent Opera Free VPN available from Google Play Store which runs really well on this box.

This is likely a dumb question, but I can’t seem to pair my rii wireless keyboard, can someone offer some help? Thanks.

    • Lifeistooshort January 1, 2017 at 1:24 pm - Reply

Maybe a dumb answer but… you did take the back off the Rii and remove the usb receiver and then plug that into the A95X? Also hold the Rii close to the A95X to help pairing. The Rii manual reads:-
      Installation
      1. Take off the USB receiver from back cover of the keyboard
      2. Plug the USB Receiver into your device’s USB port.Such as android tv box, smart tv
      3. Turn on the keyboard.
A blue LED will stay on. That means the keyboard has paired with your device.
You can enjoy the keyboard now!

      • Natalie Lipka January 1, 2017 at 1:30 pm - Reply

Lol. No I didn’t. The rii leaflet said to hold F4 turn it on let go of the button and the plug the USB cable into the box so that’s what I did multiple times and nothing happened. So I just plug in that small piece that’s in the back? It’s not attached to anything. Thanks. I appreciate your time and reply.

Assuming that we are both talking about the same Rii i8 then yes! Hopefully you’ve got it working now. 🙂

Yes we are :). I’ve got it working, so easy. Thanks very much, I can’t believe it was that simple lol. ? Thanks again I really appreciate your help.

I have had mine one for about 4 months now. I hate it. I don’t know if it is a fault or my TV but everything I watch (and sometimes in the Kodi menu) forces the picture outside of my screen. As if it has zoomed in. I then have to go into video calibration to fix it (at least twice). Troy do you have any ideas because I have tried every single solution I can find and nothing helps.

bought 4 of these 3 of them had serious crash errors after going on google play, and one power jack became loose and kept disconnecting from power source. Love the design but they just crash all the time which is a shame as i love the box and its the only one that has 8gb of space others say they have 8 but they only have 4.7 or 5gb

I’ve been using a Firestick on my tv but have also run Kodi as LibreELEC installed on a pendrive on my laptop as well as Kodi just installed under Windows 7 or 10 and Linux Mint. Recently I got an A95X 2GB/16GB and am running it alongside the Firestick for comparison.
Firstly I uninstalled Kodi which was preloaded with loads of addons many of which didn’t function and reinstalled a fresh copy from Play store. Then I installed a remote app on my phone and paired that up with the box. Adding just what I need to the system and nothing more.
So far I’m very happy and the extra processing power makes this a really good media centre.

Hi guys…….i’ve recently just received 3 of these boxes (2G/8G)…on the whole i do find them excellent. The interface is good, comes with Kodi 16.1 ANDROID 6.0…..To be fair , the remote is the best standard one that comes with a box that i’ve come across. Personally, i would recommend doing a FRESH START of Kodi as whilst their are LOADS of add ons included their are far too many in my opinion and it will only slow the box down especially when they all update. Everyone has their favourite build but i use one from Spinz (its free)…it is very user friendly and has all the necessary add ons included for sports , movies, roms etc..Personally i then add STB emu from the Play Store and use a different IPTV service on that. So far, it runs everything smoothly, is very compact and doesnt feel “cheap”….also it comes with the ability for OTA updates, on 2 of the boxes it worked great…on the third it froze and i had to do a factory reset. As a reseller i was selling T95M’s which were very good, couldn’t get hold of any more so tried these A95X….might stay with this model now. For people complaining about buffering etc……..it’s the nature of live tv, theres only so much bandwidth on these “free” servers and people will struggle especially on events with high demand like 3pm Football/Soccer…….if you want guaranteed streams for that then get a paid sub from one of the many providers……..personally i only use the Kodi section of these android boxes now for films, tv shows etc…and for that (depending on wifi) they are excellent.

    • Vincent Patrick December 7, 2016 at 5:42 pm - Reply

ive bought 4, all crash even after updating apps updated google play but still has problems cant believe no one else has come across this with these boxes

I’m right there with you dude.t This thing sucks…..maybe I bought the wrong model? And the wireless is awful on this thing. Also freezes and crashes with music playing and Web surfing.

  26. dan digger November 8, 2016 at 1:05 pm - Reply

This box is sluggish to use, the remote is the worst I have ever used, and it has a tendance to freeze. I know that some negative reviews for this box have been removed from some sites on the promise of a free box. It’s a seriously bad buy.

    • Vincent Patrick December 7, 2016 at 5:43 pm - Reply

your right, every box ive bought has crashed and had errors on especially when accessing google play

      • Nik14 December 29, 2016 at 12:22 am - Reply

I have deleted unnecessary apps and it has reduced the number of crashes. It still freezes from time to time but less often. I dare not use 2 àpps consecutively without clearing the cache or else it will crash.

I have the A95X but bt sports is unwatchable and so is sky sports and the buffering is terrible on most things the only thing I can watch are movies. I didn’t install it myself I got someone to do it for me and he assured me it was perfect

Have the box Kodi doesn’t have a PVR Client, so I can’t load my IPTV on to it, this was the only reason I got the box

    • chad gill October 12, 2016 at 3:02 pm - Reply

Looks like the box has no supported backend in order to utilize PVR Client, so you know of a fix? If not then this needs to be specified I’ve been running IPTV on my fire stick but wanted the box for more Ram and better CPU in order limit the buffering, I guess I’ll scrap it and go to the Fire TV

      • Troy October 23, 2016 at 9:37 am - Reply

When you say PVR client, are you expecting a coax cable hookup on these? Fire TV doesn’t have this either.

    • Chris Sullivan November 9, 2016 at 9:37 am - Reply

depending on the build you put on kodi, there are plenty of PVR CLIENTS available within Kodi…you just need to enable them within settings. I have personally used my IPTV service using a pvr client in Kodi..x-tream codes i think it was called. I know use STB emu from the Play Store.

      • chad gill November 9, 2016 at 8:36 pm - Reply

Ok just got the nexbox in the mail couldn’t wait to open but I went into Kodi and into exodus, movies and clicked on multiple selections in that category and nothing will open!! I think I read somewhere you like to uninstall and reinstall on your own Is that something I should do? Or do you have any other recommendations? Thanks

    • Troy October 11, 2016 at 11:12 am - Reply

This should work fine out of the box. Make sure that there are no problems with your Internet connection. If you can’t get it to work, yes, you can do a fresh install of Kodi, install addons and start over. Good luck.

I compared my Nexbox 95x to my firestick on the same tv by the way just used different HDMI ports. The firestick is supper cliear but the Nexbox 95x is a lot darker. I would like to share them with you. Don’t know if I could add it here or maybe on your Facebook Messenger? I made a video. Also, the remote works fine in Kodi but, I added Stb emulator for Iptv and whenever, I select OK…the content menu items appear (from settings all the way down to exit.) I have the select the reverse to clear that command on the remote control.

  35. Wilma Rochelle McFadden September 12, 2016 at 5:49 am - Reply

I purchased this Nexbox 95x because, I liked your review however, the remote control doesn’t quit work properly but, I’m working around that. The main issue, I have is the picture is too dark. Troy,I hope you have a solution. if not, I’ll have to return it to Amazon. Everything else is fine. I like the fact that it is smaller/lighter then my other boxes.

    • Troy September 12, 2016 at 12:41 pm - Reply

Hello Wilma, when you say the picture is lighter, you will want to adjust your TV brightness for that. What is wrong with the remote? Keep in mind that this is different that Fire TV in that you need to click the mouse button on the remote to put remote in mouse mode so you can move mouse around on screen with arrows. Take care, Wilma.

I’m keen to try an Android box running the new Android 6, this could be a decent option!
My only real gripe with Android TV boxes is while they can do 24fps, they can’t do the actual 23.976fps which does result in the occassional skip when watching HD material. Do you know if Android 6 can do 23.976? This is the only thing stopping me replacing the comparatively expensive PC based HTPCs in the house.

I returned mine and bought the firetv 4K I love it much better. The nexbox was really choppy on all videos. It never buffered but it was too choppy for me. The firetv 4K runs kodi with full builds flawlessly.

Jamie, thank you for being a member! I tried the Spinz IPTV but never got any reply! Lately, I have been using PlayStation Vue which has an app in Fire TV app store and the quality is EXCELLENT. Only 29 bucks per month for all of the channels that I care to have. Check it out if you want a cheap option besides cable. Take care.
