How To Block or Disable Fire TV Updates

Block-Fire-TV-Updates2As of Amazon Fire TV Firmware, the debloater tool does not allow the blocking of Fire TV automatic updates which was the best way to achieve this.

After trying to unsuccessfully block automatic updates via router for the past week, I am done dealing with this unnecessary procedure.

I am of the belief that Amazon will never block Kodi as they rely on too many people who use Kodi and also Amazon Prime.  They would be shooting themselves in the foot if they ever did this.

If they ever did block the installation of Kodi, we can use an Android TV Box which will work just as good if not better than the Fire TV/Stick.  Here is a powerhouse that costs approximately $35 – MXQ Pro 4K.

Original Post – Still Works For Firmware & Below

For those of you who own a Fire TV or Fire TV Stick, you have probably noticed that it performs automatic updates without any intervention on your part.  This can be a great thing if you don’t use any sideloaed apps such as FireStarter.

This tutorial will walk you through the necessary steps on how to block or disable Fire TV updates on your Fire TV or Fire TV Stick.  This is an easy process that can also be undone very quickly if you would like to resume receiving automatic updates for your Amazon Fire TV.

With the latest release of Fire TV firmware, you have probably noticed that FireStarter no longer works properly.  The big question is, “What other steps will Amazon take in the future to ban other applications, such as Kodi?”

For now, I don’t want to take the chance of not being able to use Kodi so I am going to block or disable Fire TV updates on all of my devices so I can rest assured that I will always be able to use Kodi.

This process only takes a few minutes and can be accomplished with two programs; ADBFire, and Debloater.  You may find download links for each program below.

I’ve had updates blocked for some time now on my fire TV, but recently installed a vpn.
The next time I turned it on it had updated to the latest firmware.
No big deal, but I was wondering is this connected or is there another address Amazon are now using to force updates?

Well, laaaate. There is a new OS, and it does not have the debugger options, the whole settings options has been changed, there is no ‘system.”
    Go home, everyone.

Sittingb here watching a movie right now. Search this: Jailbreak Amazon Fire TV Stick 2017 (Install Kodi). Her tutorial was great.

If they ban Kodi on the Fire OS, the fire stick and any other fire OS product is finished.

    • Troy August 30, 2016 at 12:45 pm - Reply

Guys, you will see in my article above, I quit worrying about blocking updates. I don’t think Amazon is going to ever ban Kodi. If they do, we have a ton of other options besides Fire TV.

How do you connect fire stick to pc to install the software ?

  13. Lyn Jones August 17, 2016 at 9:03 pm - Reply

I may have missed my window of opportunity to block the .apk file you listed to prevent Amazon Fire TV from auto-updating.

I blocked the apk with the debloater, but when I check the settings in the Fire TV, it says it will update the next it it restarts.

Is there anything I can do?

    • Troy August 19, 2016 at 11:05 am - Reply

Hi Lynn, as I reference in the article, this doesn’t work with upgraded firmware any longer. You can still install Kodi onto any Fire TV device so don’t worry if you haven’t blocked the updates.

I was able to root an updated Firestick, install an older version of the firmware, block future updates and also get Firestarter reworking into the bargain. Used ADB, debloater and a downloaded older firmware zip.

Hello Russell, make sure that ADB Debugging is on within your Fire TV settings. Also, ensure that both your Fire TV and computer are on same network.

I’m curious as to if you use the debloater and block updates using your IP address that fire stick has listed will it only work at that up address or is the over the air updates blocked no matter where you plug it in hotel , visiting someone and using their internet etc…

    Great info Troy –
I see a few people have asked about what happens if an auto update had already rendered the app impaired (as I think hashe happened with Kodi on my fire stick)
Will going through this process help the app to work like before the update?
    Thanks –

    • Troy May 17, 2016 at 5:27 pm - Reply

Hi James, no this will not push your firmware back to what it was but it will protect from automatic Fire TV updates in the future. My plan is to keep these on and then turn off if I know update won’t interfere with Kodi or anything else on the system.

    Hello Troy
I have lost Firestarter since Amazon upgraded my FTV 1st Gen to, and also the Kodi Icon in the homepage under sideloaded Apps.
Once I block Amazon as per your method, can I re-install Firestarter via AdbFire or ESExplorer.

Hello Troy, I followed your instructions and everything went well the first time I did it. However when I tried this process on my second fire stick as soon as I launched debloater a message came up and it reads as follows:

Your device does NOT support block mode. We will disable/hide your packages instead of blocking them

On my first successful attempt the package I check was: device softawareOTA.apk

    I am running Windows 7

Can you please give me a hand with this problem.

    Thank you

    • Troy May 5, 2016 at 11:25 am - Reply

Hello, go ahead and let it disable/hide your packages instead of blocking them.

      • Lilly June 16, 2016 at 6:23 pm - Reply

If we let it disable/hide our “packages,” will it actually block updating of the firmware?

    • Troy April 10, 2016 at 6:05 pm - Reply

Hello Ernie, I think my plan is to turn on the block and see what happen with each release. If it doesn’t hurt anything, I will turn off block, let it update, and then turn back on:) Yes, I will play that game. Take care.

Hey Troy another great video. Just one question. If Firestarter is already gone do I just reload it after I turn the updates off? All my Firesticks got the upgrade so I lost firestarter on all of them?

  30. James April 9, 2016 at 3:35 am - Reply

Debloater not accepting instruction. All areas greyed out. Message states that it has been blocked due to system being damaged

  31. James April 8, 2016 at 11:46 pm - Reply

I am being blocked from downloading ADB Fire. Will try again SAT. Let me know how to unblock it! I was wondering how Kodi was all of a sudden on my main menu and was just clicking on it then found the double click did not work, then discovered Firestarter was no longer working at all. Glad I updated all to Jarvis 16!

    • Troy April 9, 2016 at 1:52 pm - Reply

Hello James, I don’t know why you would be blocked from downloading ADBFire unless your virus program is doing it. You may want to temporarily disable that and then try again.

This happened to me and I had to reinstall ADBFire. Also, you may want to try restarting your router and computer to see if that helps. Also, ensure that you are using correct ip address and adb debugging is turned on.
